(i'm in conspiracy theory mode after reading the links in your post) This is a breif history blurb.... With the onset of the Great Depression, the Jekyll Island Club members became disenchanted with the island. They began traveling to European spas and elsewhere for their entertainment. After the 1942 season, the U. S. government asked the members not to use the island for the duration of World War II due to concerns for the security of the powerful owners. They never went back. now it's a resort, vacation, historical type spot... and they have haunted houses...

I think I'd rather pay my taxes & vote so that I may feel entitled to a political opinion. I can harass my MP all I want. How likely is it that he'd listen to me if I had thousands in outstanding taxes? Interesting approach though. I see the logic in the approach of "Why should I pay my taxes when I don't have the same rights as straight people?" It certainly draws attention to the issue.

that's a different situation, though. some people send letters to the IRS saying that they will not pay because they don't approve of how their money will be spent. i'm just asking a question, i'm not trying to make up my mind about whether to pay taxes or not. just wondering if people do it or not.

i don't think that would be an effective agent of change. the boston tea party was more of a significant protest about a tax and lack of sovreignity. the connection between paying taxes and gay marriage isn't as distinct. i do know people that claim their not working wives as a deduction, that makes more sense. maybe if you could afford a lawyer it would be worth the fight.
