very true The US is still a good place to go if you want to work hard and make money and in fact if you do not want to work at all and mooch off of our system it is pretty easy to do as well. But some of the people who want to come here and succeed are shocked at how hard it is. Lots of rumours abound in the third world about how the US "just gives you stuff" and you can become a millionair easily. Some of what brings people to our shores is not accurate information.

It has its benifits It is more "free" than England (and has better health care IMO)but it certainly is not home of the free anymore. So many other countries one can more easily "do what they want" with little interference from the state. In Colombia people actually have more "rights" than we do when they are arrested BUT they also have tons of extra judicial killings. But in Colombia you can smoke in bars and pretty much drink and drive as long as you are not too shit faced. and drink and drive with a gun in your lap..which is kind of cool.

I have been to the third world and some of the "third world" is not really the "third world" anymore. But some of it is so shocking that when I hear the comment "some parts of the US are like a third world country" I know they are saying that more for dramatic effect than out of truth. Personally I think parts of the US are very similar to post industrial eastern Europe and as far as poverty goes there are similarities to the poverty found in places like Romania and some better off parts of South America. We are slipping for sure. But not third world (our plumbing is too good) The one that baffles me is that we Americans think we have good roads. Our roads suck...but they are not the dirt road kind of suck. Romania and Bulgaria have better roads than we do and Italy, Germany and France have roads that are akin to driving on grippy silk at very high speeds.
