I have been to the third world
and some of the "third world" is not really the "third world" anymore. But some of it is so shocking that when I hear the comment "some parts of the US are like a third world country" I know they are saying that more for dramatic effect than out of truth. Personally I think parts of the US are very similar to post industrial eastern Europe and as far as poverty goes there are similarities to the poverty found in places like Romania and some better off parts of South America. We are slipping for sure. But not third world (our plumbing is too good) The one that baffles me is that we Americans think we have good roads. Our roads suck...but they are not the dirt road kind of suck. Romania and Bulgaria have better roads than we do and Italy, Germany and France have roads that are akin to driving on grippy silk at very high speeds.
