Divorce Issue
There are several questions. For example, did you have any attorney? Was your spouse served with papers? Do you know where they are? It doesn't matter where you were married. If it was a legal marriage, you need to divorce the person in order to move on with your life. If you know where the person is and they did not show up, maybe they don't want the divorce. You can still push for the divorce without the person's cooperation. If they do not show up, several attempts are made to contact them. You can publish in local papers and if they don't respond, you can still push for the divorce without their signature. You can also push for a legal separation that turns into a legal divorce after a year. If you have problems with your spouse, this may be the way to go. You will be legally separated, which provides certain protection (i.e., if he charges up debt, you won't be liable for his debt). Right now, you are responsible for half his debts (if you live in the State of NY). If you don't make sure you check out the rules of your State. If you are not pushing for a divorce because you want to remarry, a legal separation might truly be the way to go. Good luck! Irma
